The Water Landing Rail Station at TEDA Promenades

Tianjin, People’s Republic of China

As part of Cuningham Group’s master plan for TEDA Promenades, the scope of work included design and development of retail, entertainment, commercial, housing and transit projects within the two-million square meter development.

Cuningham Group designed a rail station at the expansive TEDA Promenades project in Tianjin for BMT, the Chinese rail company responsible for the rail line that transverses the TEDA Promenades site as it connects Tianjin and TEDA.

The Water Landing rail station concept was inspired by the metaphor of a waterfowl landing on a lake. The graceful roof elements freeze in time the movements of a bird in the final stages of flight. The loading station and its winged roof features are contained within a framework of four monumental glass encased columns. These elements, while lending a sense of stability and structure to the overall design, also house the public services, back of house functions and a variety of retail opportunities. The glass also provides an ideal location for corporate sponsors to identify themselves.
