International Retail Pavilion at TEDA Promenades

Tianjin, People’s Republic of China

As part of Cuningham Group’s master plan for TEDA Promenades, the scope of work included design and development of retail, entertainment, commercial, housing and transit projects within the two-million square meter development.

The TEDA Promenades International Retail Pavilion is designed to evoke the famous shopping districts of the world’s most exciting cities. While the character of each district will be distinct and singular, they will each have a strong relationship to one another, part of the bigger architectural language that unites the Retail Pavilion as a whole, and contributes to its iconic value and sense of place. The overall character of each district, including its colors, materials, signage, common area and architectural vocabulary will be developed by Cuningham Group.

The Retail Pavilion will be novel in its approach to media inclusion, fully integrating it into the architecture. Building skins and surfaces that are layered and transparent in the daylight will become moving and active walls of color, light and video by night. The media will provide a constant stream of income for TEDA; yet will be skillfully and tastefully executed so that the place is ever alive, fresh, current and active.
