“There is little substitute for the design satisfaction of engaging a community where populations are transformed by an opportunity to begin to experience
things many take for granted.”
For the past 15 years, I have focused on the design of multifamily housing because of why, a powerful tool that brings us to our feet. It transforms our thoughts from the mundane to the catalytic difference of deep, meaningful, and purposeful connections. When we understand ideology (i.e., purpose and values), combined with a deep understanding of context, that is where we all bring our design skills to bear; to solve, create, enhance and contrast.
Cuningham’s LIVE Studio is focused on “neighborhood scale,” which defines and emotes places of past, present and future. We work in large palettes of building form where our teams create a design that effectively reshapes the world; from giving the edge back to its neighboring buildings to defining a new face or open space for the community it serves. In historically distressed communities, there is a visible shadow of discriminatory practices, and here we find a great responsibility and an inherent chance to make a meaningful difference.
We are offered opportunities to design supportive housing for the people of that community and its larger context. When crafted carefully through the appropriate experiential design lens, it generates dignity, support, community, culture, safety, reclamation, equity and other emotive qualities found substantially less in more affluent areas.
Our design work shapes lives, minds and hearts with a sense of belonging. There is little substitute for the design satisfaction of engaging a community where populations are transformed by an opportunity to begin to experience things many take for granted. Concepts like home ownership (historically an inequitable form of wealth creation), personal stabilization, and improvement in the lives of their families are tangible outcomes of emotive design. I am extremely proud of the Cuningham team members who have worked hard to create a better life for affordable housing communities, and believe it’s a great way that our firm gets up each day to live out our People value.
