Epic’s Deep Space

Epic’s Deep Space
December 2016

Epic Systems’ Deep Space is the world’s largest sub-surface auditorium. Situated on an 811-acre site, the Deep Space auditorium seats up to 11,400 guests. The vast scale and advanced technology of Deep Space is designed for one purpose, to enhance the audience experience.

A large-scale clay model was 3D-scanned in order to produce a digital point cloud became the engine that drove the other technical delivery tools of the project. AIA praised the auditorium’s green roof for providing “visual and physical connections to the surrounding Wisconsin landscape.”

From the beginning, the company’s founder and CEO, Judith Faulkner, pushed the limits of design. From the depth and span of the structure to the complexity of the building’s geometry to its sheer scale, the project posed immense challenges. But thanks to the highly collaborative process the team managed to meet and exceed all expectations. At the first large gathering at Deep Space, Faulkner told one of the architects, “I wouldn’t change a thing.”
