In 1984, Cuningham Group receives its first AIA Honor Award from Minnesota AIA for work on the Lehmberg Gazebo in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, one of the smallest structures to win this award. The gazebo is built in late history professor Stanford Lehmberg’s family garden.
Prior to the gazebo’s construction, Lehmberg knew that his beautiful garden lacked a certain focus. Cuningham Group, led by John Cuningham, designed a screened-in living space with palladian windows and an intersecting arched barrel vaulted ceiling. The gazebo is recognized in the 1984 May/June edition of Architecture Minnesota, who described the beautiful design as an “outdoor living space among the flowers in summer, an object of beauty in the winter.” Lehmberg’s garden was suddenly transformed by the charming steel gazebo.
