Lompoc Hospital in California has officially been open since 1943 but offers a rich history that dates back to the late 1700’s. Cuningham Group was hired to build a replacement hospital and challenged with balancing the needs of the hospital against rising construction costs while maintaining a high level of quality. Our unique design and delivery solution saved more than $75 per square feet in construction costs. The 111,000-square-foot hospital features both a main hospital and a supporting outpatient center, allowing for future renovation and expansion. The unique design features two nearly adjacent buildings, matching in appearance and character, that stand a mere four inches apart but appear seamless to the eye.
By separating the main hospital/critical care areas from the outpatient center/non-critical care areas, Cuningham Group consolidated the portions of the facility that required higher construction costs and built them separately from those that were less costly to construct. The process of separating what would otherwise be a single structure resulted in significantly lower construction fees without compromising the desired design or quality. Construction began on the outpatient center while the main hospital was under review, which saved the hospital both time and money.
