Renovation, Charter School, Middle School, STEM
Cuningham Group transformed an existing church, classroom building, and administration building into a charter middle school with a STEM-focused curriculum. The existing administration building was converted to offices and support spaces, while the classroom building was re-configured to house 12 classrooms around a skylit central atrium. The existing church building now serves as a multi-purpose room, administrative offices, and art spaces to be shared with community members.
A “living environment” theme is carried throughout the school and can be used as a teaching element. The first floor, inspired by the roots of a tree, features warmer tones, while the second floor is colored with cooler tones to emulate leaves sprouting from its limbs. The atrium creates a visual connection between the two floors and promotes a living, active space. The greenhouses and donor vines on the second level carry this theme to the building’s exterior.
