Master Plan, Sustainable Design Features

The Heywood Campus Master Plan creates a holistic campus design for Metro Transit’s Bus Operations and Administration in the heart of Minneapolis’ burgeoning North Loop neighborhood. The site itself is the project’s biggest challenge to meeting the goals of creating a campus-like environment and unmistakable front door, connecting more strongly to the city grid, and consolidating the campus.

A plan was created that addresses hundreds of daily interactions and logistical issues with the bus fleet and provides green roofs, solar canopies, and campus-wide pedestrian connections. The project also includes a museum-like, glass-enclosed walkway showcasing Metro Transit history and central employee gathering spaces/meeting rooms/social spaces. A new central courtyard and reconfigured entry space provide a new “front door” to campus. A new Transit Police building, sited by the master plan process, is the first component to be actualized. Sustainable and restorative solutions for the campus were essential and focused on energy, stormwater, and HVAC components throughout site design.
