New Construction, Affordable Housing, Public Spaces, Gardens
Northfield @ Stapleton Apartments is a vibrant healthy living environment located at the entrance to the Stapleton Northfield Development in Denver. The 48-unit project provides much needed affordable housing options in the city and is also the gateway to the Northfield area, marking the entrance to the main boulevard, entertainment, and retail district. The building aims to address the isolation of affordable housing and instead foster connectivity with the neighborhood in massing and scale, along with pedestrian walkways. The center courtyard provides safe retreat from the busy city streets and healthy living options are available, such as large playgrounds and gardening and cooking areas.
The public realm spaces were designed to offer residents places to rest, grow, and play. These spaces are centrally located to offer equitable access, and are aligned with building entries to the east and west. The space for “rest,” a zen-style garden, is gently nestled between wings of the building to foster quietude and privacy; the “grow” space hosts planters for a community gardening, allowing residents to grow their own fresh food with space for picnicking and a grill; the “play” space has an undulating rubberized play surface and climbing structure. Low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plants surround the entire development, eliminating the need for lawn maintenance.
