Expansion and Renovation
The second phase of Watts Learning Center includes the addition of eight classrooms, a new administration suite, and support spaces. After demolition of various existing structures, a new, two-story building was designed to join the former two-story classroom building in a simple “L” shape. The result is a learning village that is organized around a central communal courtyard space at grade-level for learning, eating, and playing.
Color and light played a large role in the design of the project. On the open walkway at the second floor, the use of perforated metal panels and colored glass provide playful patterns of color and shadow on the building and walkway. Over the outdoor eating area, the same perforated metal panel shades the lunch area while adding color and movement to the “village center.”
